Summertime…and the livings easy…

Summer1

I have always thought of San Diego as, “That sleepy little beach town just south of S. California.”  Let’s face it, we are NOT Los Angeles or Orange County.  San Diego has it’s own vibe and pace.  We are laid back and buzzed on craft beer.  We surf, skate, hike, wander, and do “Local” better than most.  With that said I offer up some of the best things to do this summer in San Diego courtesy of SanDiego.org.

FREE things to do:  Beaches.  It’s no secret San Diego is home to some of the best beaches in the world.  We offer everything from surf beaches to walking beaches.  Kids beaches to adult beaches.  A few of my favs include Law St. in Pacific Beach, Coronado, San Elijo, Ocean Beach, and of course Mission Beach.

Balboa Park after Dark.  Consistently rated as one of the best urban parks in the country, Balboa Park comes alive at night!  Check it out!

Attractions:  Where to start?  The Zoo and Wild Animal Park?  Sea World?  Del Mar Races?  LegoLand?  Belmont Park?  Birch Aquarium?  Cabrillo National Monument?  OK take your pick!

4th of July:  San Diego has deep military roots and no one does Independence Day like San Diego!  From the parade on Coronado to the massive and synced up fireworks displays, San Diego does the 4th of July right!

Del Mar Horse Racing:  There is literally no better place on Earth then opening day at Del Mar.  Where the turf meets the surf!  Racing starts on July 19th, and in addition to racing be sure to enjoy the several concerts happening as well.

Early morning thoughts…

sprinklers 6:00 AM.  The sound of my sprinklers wakes me up.  Kitchen.  Coffee.  Paper.  Yes, I still enjoy reading the local rag.  Just something about holding an actual paper while sipping coffee and getting the local angle.  I step out onto my deck to see what section of the yard is getting wet.  The garden?  Cool, let’s go see if any new tomatoes or peppers are sprouting.  Coffee still in hand I wander down, watch the pool sweep for a minute, how does it know where to go?  The birds are chirping, sun is shining, another great summer day.

When I became a homeowner this is exactly what I had in mind.  My own space.  The ability to decide where to put MY stuff…in MY place.  Sure, it’s a big deal to own a home, but we need to remember that home-ownership is not just about how well your investment is doing financially, but how well YOU are doing because you have a place to call your own.  The understanding that you worked your ass off to have this place just makes it all that much sweeter.  That’s what being a homeowner is really all about.  The little things that make up each day…in your home.

deckBack to the deck.  Grab a seat, open the business page, more coffee?  The sun is coming up over the trees now.  The hummingbirds are jockeying for position at the feeder, and the sprinklers are on their last cycle.  Deep breath.  Sit back and just listen.  Early morning thoughts.  Perhaps the best one’s of the day.  I wonder what tomorrow morning will bring?

Fair2Summer in San Diego…it’s the best!  Sure, we have the sun, surf, and sand…but there is so much more to enjoy.  Here are a few of my favorite things to do in the summer.

First up is a stop at the San Diego County Fair.  Often referred to as, “The Del Mar Fair”, this is the place to kick off summer in San Diego.  The fair has an awesome midway, tons of rides, lots of crazy food (try the deep fried anything) and of course shopping galore.  What you may not know about is the concert series featuring everything from Joan Jett to Switchfoot.  And be sure to check out the Wine, Beer and Bacon Festivals!  The San Diego County Fair runs June 8 through the 4th of July.

aquatica facebook cover Next up is a visit to the new SeaWorld Aquatica Water Park in Chula Vista.  SeaWorld recently bought the park from Knott’s and has transformed it into a tropical paradise with water slides, wave pools, lazy rivers and more!  It’s open daily until 5 or 6 PM, and offers a variety of family fun!  They also offer ticket deals allowing you to visit the water park and the main SeaWorld park.

If I asked you what your favorite concert venue is, what would your answer be?  Sure there are a lot of great places to catch live music, but for my money one of the best is Humphrey’s!  Located on Shelter Island, this venue offers some of the most awesome views and performers in town.  The stage is just off the Shelter Island Marina and it’s common for locals to show up on paddle boards, in dinghy’s, and even on small boats to catch a glimpse of their favorite performers. Acts this year include The Doobie Brothers, Jewel,humphreys_2005-1024x684 Chris Issak, Willie Nelson, and Los Lobos.  There are also headlining  comics like Jim Gaffigan and Joan Rivers.  But make no mistake, the real scenery is… well…just that…the scenery!

Horse No San Diego summer would be complete without a visit to the Del Mar Horse Races!  The annual meet kicks off July 17th and runs through September 4th.  There is no place in the world better for playing the ponies.  In addition to the racing, each year also features a concert series and this year is no different with acts that include The B-52’s, Weezer, and Ziggy Marley.  Also featured this year is the San Diego Beer Fest on July 27th with over 100 beers!  It’s a must attend event for any beer enthusiast!

Summer also means graduations.  And this year is a special year for us because my oldest son, Cooper, is graduating with Honors from Valhalla High School.  His mom and I are so proud of him for his hard work and dedication to his academics.  Along the way he participated in track and field, doing the pole vault and high jump his freshman year.  He also played varsity volleyball, earning letters and the San Diego Union Tribune’s All Academic Athlete’s award his junior and senior years.  He will be attending San Diego State University and is planning to major in business management, with an emphasis on entrepreneurship.  Hmmm…wonder where he got that!  Congrats Cooper!  You are on your way and mom and I are so proud of you!Cooper

Summer time and the livin’s easy…

Kids are out of school…well almost, my high school freshman son has finals…but the little ones are out and ready to rumble!  As we gear up for another epic San Diego summer I anticipate the RV’ing, hiking, BBQ’s, and busy real estate season that we will enjoy.  And since this is a real estate blog, let’s start with some real estate data.

According to the San Diego Union Tribune, home prices in S. California have risen at the fastest pace in 5 years.  The story says, ” Home prices throughout Southern California rose by 22.5 percent in May, the highest year-over-year jump in five years, MDA DataQuick reported Tuesday.” Much of this has been attributed to the tax credits and other stimulus programs the government has instituted, and many feel that going forward the economy and job market will be the driving force, not interest rates or government sponsored programs.  You can check the story out here.

Which brings us back to summer!  This is the joy of living in SoCal.  Epic beach days, the kids squeezing in every second they can.  And us taking it all in and hopefully appreciating what we have.  As avid RV’ers, we spend about 3 weeks each summer camping at the beach.  Be it the Silver Strand in Coronado or San Elijo in Encinitas, we love it!  Take some time to check out SoCal’s best campgrounds and make a reservation to get out and enjoy.  It’s one of the best family outings you can do and it’s still very cost friendly.

Camping at the beach not your thing?  Try a nice afternoon cruise along any of the fabulous board walks we have!  It is without a doubt one of the best ways to enjoy the beach.  The best people watching, great little cafe’s , restaurants and bars, and a great way to reconnect with your youth and perhaps even your spouse or significant other.

The 4th of July in San Diego is awesome!  Fireworks boom at many beach areas, county parks, and even private country clubs.  Two of my favorites spots to watch is at the Ocean Beach pier and Silver Strand State Beach, where you can see as many as 6 shows at once!  Get out and enjoy the summer in one of the world’s best places…San Diego!  After all, there are fringe benefits to calling SD home and you can enjoy your very own “Stay-cation” everyday.
